Queensland Premiership round 14 wrap

Mon, 30 Jun 2008 14:05

Queensland Reds No. 8 Leroy Houston helped propel Norths into third place on the Queensland Premier competition ladder after the completion of round 14.

Houston brushed away several would-be tacklers to score a try right on full-time, minutes after doing much the same to set up a second five pointer by the Eagles other standout, centre Blair Connor, at a time when University were looking dangerous.

The one time competition cellar dwellers, who are enjoying a resurgence under the coaching of former Wallaby Chris Roche, are well placed to make the final four for the first time in years after their bonus point 39-20 win - although they face strong rivals in Sunnybank, the Gold Coast and Great Public Schools (GPS), who they play next weekend.

Brothers continued their unbeaten run with a crushing 40-15 win over Souths that looks to have ended their finals hopes, while second placed Easts fought out a tough 25-12 victory over Sunnybank.

Both Sunnybank and the Gold Coast Breakers suffered from having to play a catchup game midweek, with the Breakers unable to contain GPS at home at Ashgrove - and powerful centre Jim Kite in particular. Next week's Ashgrove match will be crucial for both Norths (44 points) and GPS (40), who are now equal fourth with Sunnybank.

The Sunshine Coast Stingrays are headed for their best season since entering the Premier competition four years ago, beating wooden spoon prospects Wests 36-21 for their fourth win of the season.
