The Tri-Nations took a dramatic turn when South Africa played New Zealand in Carisbrook where they had never won a Test before.

In Hanover Portugal won the European Sevens. They, Wales, Georgia, Ireland and Italy qualified for the '2009 Sevens World Cup in Dubai.
