'I won't step down' - Andrew

Sun, 22 Jun 2008 12:48

Rob Andrew says he will not be stepping down from his role as Elite Director of Rugby for the RFU after a two-test tour defeat in New Zealand.

The former Newcastle Falcons coach was in charge of the England squad for two matches against the All Blacks, but things did not go according to plan for Andrew.

Not only did the team suffer two big defeats and offer little to inspire new head coach Martin Johnson, but four players were also on the end of a serious sexual assault allegation.

However, Andrew thinks that he should not be blamed for what happened on the tour and has no intention of quitting his role within the RFU.

"I am not going to consider my position. I am going to carry on doing the work that I am doing at the union. I am going to carry on with my position as the elite rugby director of the RFU," said Andrew.

"If you are going to go down the blame game, then absolutely not. We have had to deal with some very difficult situations over the last twelve months.

"The World Cup squad, as we all know, was built on experience. Since then, we have had retirements, injuries and a next generation coming through.

"We have to reflect on what we have learned on this tour".
