The Fiji Rugby Union has appointed 40-year-old Waisele Serevi as the coach for the Fiji Sevens team. He is after all the greatest Sevens player of all time.
The appointment is for the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai in 2009 and the 2008/09 IRB World Sevens Series.
Keni Dakuidreketi, the chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union board, said: “We are happy to say that the board has deliberated at length in reaching this decision. We feel the appointment of Serevi was made in the best interest of Fiji rugby.”
Serevi will be told the terms and conditions of his appointment and a manger of the team will be appointed.
The apportionment was not a foregone conclusion because in recent tournaments Fiji under Serevi have not been the power they have usually been.
Serevi played 39 times for Fiji in the 15-man game, including the World Cups of 1991, 1999 and 2003, and also played for clubs in Japan, France and England but it is in Sevens that his genius expressed itself best.
He played in winning team at the Hong Kong Sevens five times and twice in the winning team at the Sevens World Cup. Under his coaching Fiji won the World Sevens Series in 2006
