France Anthem

Fri, 18 May 2001 10:34

Written in 1792, La Marseillaise was a product of the French Revolution and was officially adopted by the new French republic three years later. Originally titled "Chant de guerre de l'armeé du Rhin", it adopted its current name after being sung by revolutionary troops from Marseilles as they marched in to Paris.

Allons enfants de la Patrie
Le jour de gloire est arrivé!
Contre nous de la tyrannie
L'étendard sanglant est levé
Entendez-vous dans nos campagnes
Mugir ces féroces soldats?
Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras.
Egorger vos fils, vos compagnes!

Aux armes citoyens
Formez vos bataillons
Marchons, marchons
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons
