Boks may have a Spanish date

Sun, 14 Sep 2008 23:31

The Springboks' end-of-year tour may still give South African a chance of winning the 'Grand Slam' on tour, with an extra date to face Ireland still on the cards.

And the game could be played in Spain, after Dubai was scrapped as a venue last month.

The Boks already have dates with Wales, Scotland and England - the latter being a repeat of last year's World Cup Final in France.

Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Sondag reported that the Management Committee of SA Rugby discussed the possibility of the Test still going ahead last week at its meeting in Cape Town, and that alternative venues were put forward, including an option for the match to be played in Spain.

The game would have been seen as an opportunity to play in a non-traditional venue, as the All Blacks and Wallabies have done in their Bledisloe Cup game in Hong Kong in November.

However, no final decision was taken, although this should be done by the end of the month.

"A lot of alternative venues have been put forward and have been discussed," SA Rugby's Director of National Teams Andy Marinos told Sondag.

"The only thing we can confirm at the moment is that it will not take place in Dubai."

Marinos added that the match would have to be confirmed by the end of the month, in order to arrange the logistics surrounding it and to get approval from the International Rugby Board (IRB).
