O'Gara gives 'best man' backing

Mon, 06 Oct 2008 09:02

Irish points machine Ronan O’Gara says he is convinced Brian O’Driscoll remains the man to lead the Ireland national team.

With new coach Declan Kidney yet to name who his captain will be there has been much speculation that O’Driscoll may step down after he already relinquished the leading spot at Leinster as he attempts to recapture his best form.

While the 31 year-old Munster star O'Gara admits he has ambitions to captain his country once again he himself believes Ireland deadly centre remains ‘the best man.’

"I've captained the Irish team before and, of course, I'd like to captain the Irish team -- it's the ultimate honour in Irish rugby. I think you'll find that the best man will captain Ireland and Brian has been the best man," said O'Gara to the Irish Independent.

"That has always been the case. Especially in Munster. It's no surprise that Paul O'Connell has captained Munster because he's the best man to captain Munster."

O’Driscoll, still widely regarded as the best centre in world rugby, has had five years at the helm of Ireland since taking over from Keith Wood in 2003 but, with his form having dipped in recent times many have began to ask whether or not a little less responsibility may allow him to return to his more natural exciting game.
