Namibian Du Toit tests softer turf

Mon, 08 Sep 2008 11:27

Namibian World Cup prop Jané du Toit had his first taste of English rugby on Saturday, after making an appearance for Plymouth Albion's development team - the Westcountry Warriors.

Du Toit played 50 minutes against Torquay Athletic at the Recreation Ground after coming on as a first-half replacement - having only arrived in Plymouth last Thursday afternoon.

Although the Warriors beat their opponents 21-3 in poor weather conditions, they failed to turn a number of good positions into points.

However, du Toit was just happy to get his first game under his belt, as well as a win.

"It was a good result for the whole squad," the prop told the Plymouth Herald.

On his arrival in Plymouth, Du Toit said he was looking forward to playing on softer grounds (compared to those in South Africa), which he certainly got on Saturday after heavy rain before and during the game made conditions at Torquay rather challenging.

"It was definitely a bit softer than I'm used to," said du Toit.

"After about 20 minutes I was feeling it a bit in the legs, but it is good to experience these conditions.

"I have to adapt to the conditions over here."

Du Toit said he would be ready if needed for the first team this weekend, stating he has got a lot more to show.

"I don't think my match fitness is as good as it can be as it has been a month since I played my last game," he said.

"It is still reasonable, but it's not where I want it to be.

"But if Graham thinks I'm up to it, then I am ready.

"It would be good to see the home crowd and see how they get behind the team."

Du Toit was impressed with his Warrior teammates on Saturday - who made him feel very welcome at Brickfields.

"The guys [Warriors] have loads of skills. Individually they are good and could all fit into the Division One side.

"And I have settled in really nicely at the club. Everyone has been so helpful. I already feel at home," Du Toit added.
