Now Bledisloe Cup heads to US shores

Wed, 27 Aug 2008 13:03

First came the Hong Kong Stadium. Now it is the 'Mile High' stadium in Denver, Colorado, as New Zealand and Australia continue to take their brands - and the Bledisloe Cup - to all corners of the globe.

A reports on Newstalk ZB in New Zealand said at least one of the Bledisloe Cup matches between the All Blacks and Wallabies will be played in the United States next year.

The Bledisloe Cup contest between the Kiwis and Aussies will go outside Australasia for the first time when the two sides go head-to-head in Hong Kong on November 1.

Now the New Zealand Rugby UNion (NZRU), Australian Rugby Union (ARU), Sydney marketing company Moore Sports, the Denver Sports Commission and USA Rugby are working together on the proposal.

Sue Baldwin from the Denver Sports Commission says the match is tentatively scheduled for October 31 next year. The venue would be the Invesco Field, which fits 78,000 people.

Baldwin says USA Rugby needs to sign off on the proposal, which it received in July. She says Moore Sports has been dealing directly with the New Zealand and Australian Rugby Unions.

The Invesco Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado, replaced the identically sized, but commercially obsolete Mile High Stadium (named for the fact that Denver is exactly one mile above sea level) in 2001. The Stadium is famous as the home of the Denver Broncos Gridiron in the National Football League (NFL).
