Rabuka in another Pacific 'coup'

Tue, 26 Aug 2008 23:11

Sitiveni Rabuka, an army commander who became Fiji's prime minister after leading a coup in 1987, could be the manager of the Pacific Islanders team on its tour to Europe in November.

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) confirmed Wednesday that Rabuka, who played at prop and captained Fiji in two Tests in the 1970s, is one of several candidates being considered for the manager's role.

"The position has not been finalized. I can confirm that he is one of the names in the frame," the chairman of the Pacific Islands Rugby Association, Keni Dakuidreketi, told the Fiji Times.

"We hope to finalize the touring team and management by Monday."

The Pacific Islanders team, combining players from Fiji, Samoa and Tonga, will play England on November 8, France on November 15 and Italy on November 22.

Rabuka and Pacific Islanders coach Ilivasi Tabua have refused to comment on the possible appointment.
