Fiji win again in FORU U19

Tue, 09 Sep 2008 11:07

Fiji beat Tonga 8-0 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi on Tuesday and in so doing are a step closer to being crowned the Under-19 champions of Oceania on Day 3 of the championship.

Previously Fiji had beaten Samoa by two points and Tonga had beaten Samoa by three points.

Fiji, Samoa and Tonga make up Pool A of FORU's Under-19 championship.

The final round of matches takes place on Friday.

Fiji vs Tonga, 8-0

The score at half-time was 0-0 after each side had missed a penalty kick at goal.

Iosefo Bele, Fiji's coach, said afterwards: "I am happy with the win especially how the boys handled the pressure from Tonga. However there are still some areas we need to touch on most especially indiscipline. To cop a yellow and a red card in a game is a worry.

“We had talked about playing discipline rugby in camp and I guess we will need to go back and stress this once more to the players.”

Isitolo Maka, Tonga's coach said: "I am happy with the overall performance of the boys. However I am concerned about the level of indiscipline that has come to the fore from our boys. And I believe we did not use our opportunities wisely. I believe this was what let us down in the end."

At half-time Samoa led 26-5.

Alani Ulia, Samoa's coach said afterwards: “It was a good game. I am pleased with the boys’ performance and I thank them for that. On the same token I would also like to thank the Papua New Guinea for a great physical game.”

Robin Tarere, the Papua New Guinea coach, said: “I thought the game against Samoa was great, in the sense that it was a good wake up call for us before the grand final. I thought we needed that to help us identify the weak areas in our defensive and attacking play and hopefully iron up those areas.”

Vanuatu vs Tahiti, 29-19

Tahiti fought back from 22-0 down at half-time. After three successive tries they got up to 22-19 before Anton Salbon secured the match for Vanuatu.

James Abner, the Vanuatu coach, said: “It was a great game. At least we are now the team on top and I think this is a great way to prepare for the final against Papua New Guinea. I know we lost badly to Papua New Guinea on Saturday but I think this win is a great boost for the boys.

“I rested some of my senior players today and so hopefully they will be on top of their game when we take on Papua New Guinea on Friday.”

Orbeck Teave, the ahiti coach, said: “The assistant coach and I are very happy with the boys’ performance. Though we lost I thought the boys looked more in control and confident in their game compared to the first time we  played.

“For the core of the boys that are in this team, this is a whole new experience and we are glad we took it. Only two of the boys that are in this team have played in major competitions before so for the majority of the team members, this was the first. And I believe coming in to play in Fiji where rugby is the No 1 sport in the country is a great bonus. This has been a learning experience for us and we will surely take back with us a lot of the good new things we have learned from this tour and help the kids and rugby back home in Tahiti.”
