Madrid ends Valladolid's hegemony

Bwin Pozuelo Boadilla CRC Madrid are the new holders of the Copa de SM El Rey after beating El Salvador of Valladolid 36-31 in the exciting Final in Madrid.
For the winners Samoan flyhalf Douglas Sanft scored 21 points.
The defeat ended a great passage of victories by El Salvador who stood to win all three Spanish trophies for the third year in a row after winning the league and the Supercopa already. This is the first time the Madrileños, a club founded only in 2002, has won a major trophy.
Sanft opened the scoring for CRC Madrid with a penalty, but El Salvador replied with a try by Oscar Bonito. Sanft kicked another penalty and then Portuguese Diogo Saldaña scored a try and the Madrid side led 13-7.
The Italo-Argentinian wing Tomás Browner scored a try but again CRC Madrid was able to go ahead at 20-12. But in the seesaw of the match El Salvador came back through a try by Nuno Da Cunha after the visitors mauled well. 20-17.
After Sanft had scored first in the second half, Spain's fullback César Sempere scored a try and the lead was now 30-17.
Anthony Bradsahw scored. 30-24 and the tension grew. Madrid lost González and Girão to the sin bin and Sanft goaled two more penalties. 36-24. In the very last minute of the match Sergio Souto scored a try to make it 36-31 but there was no time for more and a chance for the titleholders to keep their title.
