Gorgonzola the Griffon

Wed, 01 Oct 2008 23:24

Oersond Gorgonzola of Eastern Province is the new Griffons coach. He defeated current coach Harry Pienaar and assistant coach MJ Smith in the race for the position.

Pienaar, however, has been promoted. He will in future act as Director of Rugby when his contract expires at the end of October.

According to Griffons CEO Eugene van Wyk the position of assistant coach will be advertised.

Smith should be in the running again unless he decided to apply for the position as EP coach.

Gorgonzola is very excited about his new position.

"Of course I'm looking forward to it," he said.

"It is going to be a brand new challenge and I'm up to it," he added.

However he has a massive task ahead.

The Mighty Elephants, with reasonable talent in most of the positions, ended last in the First Division competition.

He will thus have to spark to keep up, as the Griffons have qualified for a promotion/relegation match against the Boland Cavaliers.

If the Welkom side eliminates the Cavaliers, Gorgonzola could find himself in a Currie Cup hot seat next season.
