SARU split down the middle?

Sat, 06 Mar 2010 09:34

There could be fireworks in the corridors of power within the South African Rugby Union (SARU) in the next few weeks in the lead-up to SARU elections - and a split in the ranks at the Annual General Council Meeting looks set to follow.

SARU Deputy President Mark Alexander has followed through on his recent announcement that he would oppose incumbent President Oregan Hoskins by being formally nominated for election.

Hoskins and Alexander have been regarded as a close team in the past two years and Alexander's challenge for the presidency has come as something of a shock.

When Alexander announced nearly a month ago that he would oppose Hoskins, he declined to divulge why he was standing for the presidency but said he would make a full media statement the following week. That statement has not yet been forthcoming.

Hoskins has been nominated as President only - and not as Deputy President or Vice President or for an Executive Council position.

Nominations received for positions to be elected at the Annual General Council Meeting of the South African Rugby Union are as follows (in alphabetical order):

President: Mark Alexander, Oregan Hoskins (incumbent)
Deputy President: Mark Alexander (incumbent), Jan Marais, Hein Mentz, Rautie Rautenbach, Tobie Titus
Vice President: Dawie Groenewald, Jan Marais, Rautie Rautenbach (incumbent), James Stoffberg
Executive Council (four to be elected): Altmann Allers, Francois Davids, Boet Fick, Dawie Groenewald, Peter Hassard, Jan Marais, James Stoffberg, Sampie Pienaar

The Annual General Council Meeting will take place at 09.00 (07.00 GMT) on Friday, March 26 at a hotel in Newlands, Cape Town.
