Eastern Province ended a two-year away drought when they defeated the Border Bulldogs 34-32 in their Vodacom Cup match at Queen’s College in Queenstown on Saturday.
The visitors started the match without a win in two seasons away from home, but had the better of their opponents by scoring five tries. The Border Bulldogs, who conceded their second defeat in the Vodacom Cup, have not won a home game in the competition since 2007.
The defending champions, Griquas, continued their impressive run against the Griffons when they defeated their opponents 59-31 at the North West Stadium in Welkom. The Griffons, who have never defeated Griquas in the Vodacom Cup, conceded nine tries.
Western Province recorded their first win in the Vodacom Cup after defeating the Sharks XV 26-23 at Newlands on Saturday.
The hosts boasted many Super 14 players such as Willem de Waal, Dylan des Fountain, Frikkie Welsh, Conrad Hoffman, Pieter Myburgh and JD Moller in their side. However WP had to rely on their solid defence at the end to hang on to a nail-biting victory.
The Free State, Blue Bulls and Golden Lions all secured second consecutive victories.
At Loftus Versfeld on Friday, the Blue Bulls saw off a brave challenge from the Pumas to eventually triumph 29-15. The Golden Lions scored tries in their comprehensive 34-13 victory over the Valke, while the Free State held their nerve to overcome a brave performance by Boland Cavaliers to secure maximum points in a 37-29 win.
In the other Vodacom Cup game of the weekend, the Leopards comprehensively defeated the Welwitschias of Namibia 52-11 in Potchefstroom.
