Irish legend visits SARU president

Tue, 09 Mar 2010 12:06

Irish rugby and business legend Sir Anthony O’Reilly paid a courtesy call on Oregan Hoskins, the President of the South African Rugby Union, in Cape Town on Monday.

"It was a social call to discuss matters of common interest which obviously centred on rugby and South Africa," said Hoskins. "Sir Anthony has a passion for South Africa and the game, of course, and it was fascinating to get his insights."

Hoskins invited former Springbok favourites Chester Williams and Bob Skinstad to the lunch to offer a range of opinions. "The call from Sir Anthony came out of the blue but it was a very enlightening session," said Hoskins.

Sir Anthony made his name as a rugby player as a flying wing on the 1955 British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa. He scored a record 37 tries on his two Lions' tours and played for Ireland in an international career spanning 16 seasons.

He later went on to be a hugely successful CEO of Heinz before leading the Independent News & Media Group from 1973 to 2009, establishing a global media group.
