We profile Drostdy Tegniese Hoërskool, a school of many boarders in Worcester.
Worcester is on the fringe of the Karroo, enjoying the drier climate of the Karroo but with the benefits of the Western Cape in scenery and farming activity. You can ski above it and grow vines next to it. It is in the biggest wine-producing district in the country, with 24 co-operative and three private wine cellars on the Worcester Wine Route, as well as two brandy cellars. There is vegetation that is semi-desert and then there are proteas and ericas and the wonders of fynbos. There are streams with trout and rivers for canioes. There are the hot springs of the Goudini Spa.
Worcester is a wonderful place.
It took its name from Lord Charles Somerset's brother, the Marquis of Worcester, when it was founded in 1820.
It is a commercial and educational centre, including famous schools for the blind and the deaf.
Drostdy was a generic term for the magistrate's residence and court in Dutch times at the Cape. There are some fine ones - as at Graaff-Reinet, Tulbagh, Swellendam, George and Worcester. It was usually the best building in the town apart from the church.
Drostdy has 880 pupils, amongst them only 25 girls. It is one of the largest boarding schools in the country with a total of 565 pupils in the four boarding houses. The Drostdy boarding house is a national monument and is located at the end of the main street.
Drostdy has a proud rugby history and fields up to 20 teams in four age groups (Under-19, Under-16, Under-15, Under-14). The school has supplied the Boland Schools Craven Week team with a host of players over a long period. Over the years more than 130 players have earned Boland colours at Craven Week.
Each year Drostdy hosts a rugby festival at the school at the end of the cricket season..
Although situated in the heart of the Boland, Drostdy , competes mainly against the traditional rugby schools in the Western Province, such as: Paarl Boys’ High, Paarl Gymnasium, Paul Roos Gymnasium, Wynberg Boys’ High and Boland Landbou.
