The South African College High School (SACS) secured their second win of the season over rivals Rondebosch Boy’s High. The game was played at Rondebosch on a chilly but dry winter’s morning. SACS led 13-6 at half-time and eventually won the game 26-6.
The first half was a relatively scrappy affair in which the hosts held the advantage. SACS got on the wrong side of referee Andy Slater’s whistle and were heavily penalised at the breakdown. SACS only managed three good passages of play but were fortunate to come away with points on every occasion.
Rondebosch attacked with width and opened SACS up on a number of occasions but were unable to finish off their opportunities and had to be content with two penalties from flyhalf Tyren Lee. SACS opened the scoring with a good try which started from inside their own half and after multiple phases was finished off by centre Philip Ackermann. Their two other good attacking forays led to penalties which were converted, like the try, by flyhalf Chris Smith.
The second half saw the SACS forwards take control which allowed the visitors to dominate possession and territory.
Despite losing both their loose-head and hooker to injury the SACS pack maintained their intensity and kept Rondebosch on the back foot. SACS had five relatively easy penalty attempts at posts but Smith only managed to kick two of them but in so doing allowed SACS to extend their lead to 19-6.
Just before the end of the game SACS eventually got over the Rondebosch line after a great surge by substitute lock Fabio Brogneri opened up some space for scrumhalf and captain Cameron Calder to squeeze over. Smith did the necessary to the delight of the SACS supporters.
Smith’s sixteen points on the day took him past 200 points for the season, to 215, which is the most in the Western Cape this season and a record for a SACS player.
