Eight of South Africa's top match officials will be involved in two matches this weekend
SA referees have appointed Jaco Peyper to referee the first promotion-relegation match between the Southern Kings and the Lions at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday.
It is a crucial match for both sides as it decides so much of their future existence. The Kings will not want to give up the opportunities that they enjoyed this season and the Lions will desperately want to get back to where they have been in Super Rugby since its inception to this year.
SA Referees are concerned that just the best referees referee these matches, and so Peyper has come hurtling back from Christchurch to take charge of the match where he was originally expected to be an assistant to Craig Joubert in the Pretoria semifinal. Who does the return match will depend on SANZAR's requirements for the Super Rugby Final.
To help him Peyper will have Jason Jaftha, a referee with Super Rugby experience, and Sindile Mayende, a referee with Currie Cup experience.
In addition Deon van Blommestein, a top referee in his day, will be the television match official. He has made strides as a TMO this year and has now done Super Rugby matches.
That means that eight of South Africa's top match officials will be involved in two matches this weekend - Craig Joubert, Jonathan Kaplan, Marius Jonker and Shaun Veldsman in Pretoria on Saturday and these four in PE on Friday..
