The defending champion Chiefs have been forced to look beyond their extended Super Rugby squad to cover for injuries during pre-season.

The defending champion Chiefs have been forced to look beyond their extended Super Rugby squad to cover for injuries during pre-season.

New recruit Tom Marshall will miss the start of the season after he had surgery on his thumb.

Marshall has moved north to the two-time defending champions from the Crusaders.

Coach Dave Rennie said they've got some NPC players to fill the gap.

"We've got Ihaia West, who's been running with us a couple of weeks before Christmas and then now Marty McKenzie will come in as cover next week," the coach said.

Rennie said they hope to know the immediate future of Robbie Fruean in the next couple of weeks as he continues to recover from heart surgery.
