Ferreira, 26, will arrive in southern France "in the coming days" to replace Smith, who is expected to be out of action for four months after undergoing surgery on a ruptured left biceps.

The three-time European champions have won just two of their five Top 14 matches this season and are counting on Ferreira – who is "particularly powerful and devastating on impact".

He joins the club's South African contingent alongside Smith, Duane Vermeulen, Marcel Van der Merwe, Aidon Davis, Juandre Kruger and Bryan Habana.

Toulon, the 2016 finalists, play Clermont in the Top 14 on Sunday.
