Stadium renamed after Collins

Collins died last June in a car crash that also killed his wife Alana Madill. Their daughter, Ayla, survived.

The newly-named Jerry Collins Stadium was a place where Collins, as a six-year-old boy, starting playing the game of rugby.

Collins' New Zealand family turned out for the unveiling of the new name and a plaque in his honour on Good Friday.

Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett described Collins as a "true Porirua original – not just as a rugby player, but as a man".

He recalled the thousands that marched down Warspite Ave in Porirua after Collins' death, in memory of him.

"We have never seen such a spontaneous outpouring of love and warmth in this community – a powerful tribute to a kind and generous free spirit," said Leggett.
