Combrinck offers a whole lot more

Combrinck made a big impact off the bench in his debut for the Springboks at Ellis Park last weekend. He replaced Lwazi Mvovo and showed great power with ball in hand and scored a try in the 32-26 win.

Combrinck offers a whole lot moreHowever, when Coetzee explained Combrinck's selection for Saturday's game, he mainly referred to the 26-year-old's kicking game.

"I am so pleased with the way the players responded last week," Coetzee told reporters at the team announcement on Thursday.

"I am pleased with the work ethic in the team, but I always said that if I can make a tactical change that would benefit the team, I will do that.

"Bringing Ruan Combrick into the side gives us another right-footed kicker, which we don't have with Faf [Francois de Klerk], Elton [Jantjies] and Willie le Roux at the back."

Combrinck's inclusion is one of two changes to the starting XV, which levelled the series in Johannesburg. The other change sees Warren Whiteley coming in at No.8 in place of the injured Duane Vermeulen

Coetzee said Whiteley and Vermeulen are two totally different types of players.

"There will always be two different No.8s, two different hookers, two different opensiders and two different types of flyhalves. I am just happy that we got Duane [Vermeulen] and Warren Whiteley in the mix.

"We know how competitive Duane is in the physical exchanges and Warren brings something different.

"Whiteley is effective in the wide channels and covers a lot of ground on the field.

"Both bring a lot of leadership with them to support Adriaan [Strauss]. I am just happy for Warren's sake – he has been playing Combrinck offers a whole lot moreconsistently well over the last couple of seasons and it is a great opportunity for him," Coetzee added.

Meanwhile, Coetzee also defended prop Frans Malherbe at the team announcement.

Malherbe was guilty of giving a few penalties away last weekend, but Coetzee said he was never going to drop the 25-year-old for the series decider.

"There are no excuses for Frans – he conceded three penalties at ruck time," said Coetzee.

"[However] Frans has got other attributes. He made ten tackles and at the breakdown he has slowed their ball down on a number of occasions, so I do look at other contributions.

"On our ball, Frans has been excellent at scrum time and I don't think he has been penalised.

"Players will make mistakes and one has got to be careful to just look at the things that has gone wrong.

"I think it is important to build continuity and if we want to make sure we have a dominant scrum, I think the tighties need more time together."
