Two tries each, one conversion each but the difference was Florin Vlaicu's third penalty goal 12 minutes from the end. It was all that close in Madrid on Saturday.

The wind played a part, and Spain, with the wind, led 13-5 at the break after two penalty goals by Brad Linklater had set the scoring going. But while centre Mathieu Belie was on the sin bin, Romanian captain Mihai Macovei's try brought Romania within a point but then wing Sébastien Ascaret scored his first try, which Linklater converted.

Inside 10 minutes of the second half lock Valentin Poparlan's try and the conversion plus a penalty goal by Vlaicu gave Romania the lead at 15-13 but Ascaret's second try, after splendid work by the threequarters, restored the home-side's lead at 18-15, to the excitement of the 12 000 spectators. But Romania's pack were well on top and two Vlaicu penalties won the match.

Significantly both Spain's tries were scored by a wing, each of Romania's by a forward.

Russia vs Germany at Yug-Sport Stadium, Sochi. Russia won 46-20

Although still winless, this was a much better effort by Germany in wintry Sochi. Down 22-6 at half time, they scored two tries early in the second half to make the 27-20 but then the Bears pulled away.

Flyhalf Ramil Gysin opened the scoring with a penalty and then converted Igor Galinovsky's try to make it 10-0 before Chris Hilsenbeck goaled a penalty. Then No.8 Anton Rudoi and flank Victor Gresev scored tries and with a penalty by Hilsenbeck just before half-time, the score was 22-6.

early in the second half scrumhalf Alexey Shcherban scored a try but then Russia lost two players to the sin bin – Gresev and tighthead Innocent Zykov. This gave Germany a chance and it seized it with tries by Germany's South African loose forwards Jaco Otto and Jarrid Els, both converted by Hilsenbeck. That is what brought Germany close at 27-20 but then Russia got their full side back and scored another three tries – a second for Rudoi and one for substitute Yury Kushnarev and right wing Mikhail Babaev.

Oddly enough the score, almost exactly a year before, was 46-22.
