It was only in Scotland that competition was close. The Scots just won the men's match while Ireland only just got home in the Under-20 and the Women's matches.

Competition was tough in Caledonia stern and wild and not without controversy.

Ireland vs Scotland, 22-15

Friday night at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld, near Glasgow was miserable – dank and wet and won in the last minute – controversially. Mind you, the controversy would have been more in the minds of disappointed Scots.

The score was 15-all and the match was running out of time. Ireland threw into a line-out. It was an overthrow that was caught by prop Ciara O'Connor who charged downfield. This was the start of an Irish attack that went left, right and left again, till a Scottish flank was penalised at a tackle. That penalty was awarded at 79 minutes 38 seconds, according to the TV clock, which is not an official timekeeper. The referee checked with the official timekeeper and when the Irish asked if there was time for the line-out, the referee told them that there was and so Ireland kicked out for a five-metre line-out. Jennie Finlay threw in and Marie Louise Reilly leapt high to catch the ball. Before she had come back to earth the Scots drove in on her and the referee showed advantage in favour of Ireland. She allowed play to go on and Ireland were held up over the Scottish line. The referee then went back to the penalty five metres from the line. Mary Healy tapped and Ciara O'Connor charged close to the line. The ball came back to Ireland and Mary Healy passed to Nora Stapleton who gave to outside centre Jenny Murphy cutting back, and the centre raced over for the winning try.

There was no need for any controversy as everything happened according to the laws of the game in whichever the game was being played.

The game up till then had been close as the coring suggests. Scotland led 7-0 and then Ireland were ahead 10-7 through two unconverted tries. A second try by Jade Konkel gave Scotland back the lead which a penalty by Sara Law increased to 15-10, which was the half-time score.

Scotland did not score in the second half but a third Irish try brought them level. The Scottish prop, Lindsey Smith was sent to the sin bin, Ireland kicked out for a line-out, mauled and scored a try by Lindsay Peat. After 52 minutes were scores were level and they stayed so for the next half an hour when Jenny Murphy scored.
