Saracens go down to the Med

Wed, 20 Aug 2008 18:53

Saracens of North London are heading for the South of France, not on a junket but in order to play ambitious Toulon at Stade Félix Mayol in Toulon.

Both sides have several foreign players of note, but the Sarries will be missing Andy Farrell who dislocated and fractured a thumb against the Western Force recently and will be out for some time, a blow to the Sarries' recently appointed captain. But his son, Owen, will make the trip and warm the bench.

A big crowd is booked for the match, not surprising for a team that just lost to Munster in the semifinal of the Heineken Cup and is coached by Eddie Jones.

The Sarries have an international front row in more senses than won with Cobus Visagie (South Africa, Fabio Ongaro (Italy) and Maties Aguero (Argentina). They will be up against a front row of non-Frenchmen in new hooker Tiaan Liebenberg between two New Zealand props, Saimone Taumoepeau and Ben Castle.

Most interest in the Toulon side may well be the performances of two new foreigners - Jerry Collins on the flank and centre Sonny Bill Williams.

Toulon squad: Marc Andreu, Sébastien Fauqué, Matt Henjak, Martin Jagr, Norman Jordaan, Mafileo Kefu, Ramiro Pez, Tusi Pisi, Sonny Bill Williams, Khaled Zagar,  Fotunuupule Auelua, Ben Castle, Jerry Collins, Jérôme Filitoga, Philip Fitzgerald, Mathieu Larrouy, Christiaan Liebenberg, Esteban Lozada, Yoann Maestri, Thomas Sourice, Jocelino Suta, Saimone Taumoepeau, Soane Toevalu

Saracens: 15 Dan Scarbrough, 14 Rodd Penney, 13 Kevin Sorrell (captain), 12 Mike Stanley, 11 Noah Cato, 10 Gordon Ross, 9 Moses Rauluni, 8 Ben Skirving, 7 Dave Seymour, 6 Don Barrell, 5 Harry Spencer, 4 Hugh Vyvyan, 3 Cobus Visagie, 2 Fabio Ongaro, 1 Matias Aguero,
Replacements: 16 Alex Walker, 17 Tom Mercey, 18 Rob Anderson, 19 Will Fraser, 20 Mickey Wilson, 21 Owen Farrell, 22 Edd Thrower

Referee: Franck Marcello (Comité de Côte d'Azur)
Touch judges: Eric Briquet Campin (Comité de Côte d'Azur), Hervé Gilard (Comité de Côte d'Azur)
