Serevi contract at sixes and Sevens

Fri, 29 Aug 2008 12:07

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) board are scrambling in an attempt to get Fiji rugby legend Waisale Serevi to sign a new contract to coach the Fiji Sevens team.

The FRU board were in talks on Wednesday discussing the reasons for Serevi's delay in committing to the 2008/09 International Rugby Board Sevens World Series as coach of Fiji.

Serevi is expected to return to Fiji this weekend after his involvement in the Carnegie Floodlit Nines, a rugby league tournament held in Leeds, England. Serevi's Fiji UK team lost 22-10 to Wakefield in their first match.

FRU Chief Executive Ratu Timoci Tavanavanua stated that a meeting with Serevi upon his return is top of their agenda.

"Serevi raised some issues in relation to the offer we had presented him and the board has decided we discuss it with him when we meet," Ratu Timoci told the Fiji Times.

Tavanavanua said that the meeting would take place before the next coach of Fiji's Sevens team is announced.

This is not the first time that Serevi has been at loggerheads with the Fijian Board.

Jo Savou took over as Fiji's Sevens coach last season, after Serevi could not come to agreement with the FRU over his contract renewal.
