Koen to boot Cavaliers into shape

Fri, 16 May 2008 18:07

Deon Davids' selection as assistant coach for the Emerging Springboks leaves the Boland Cavaliers without their mentor for the opening round of the Currie Cup competition.

He will be replaced by Stormers assistant coach Louis Koen for Boland's opening match against the Valke at Brakpan on June 21.

Davids, however, does not see it as a major obstacle, and believes that former Springbok flyhalf and Stormers kicking coach Koen will do a great job in succeeding him.

"Louis and I had a long chat about what we want to achieve this season," said Davids.

"He knows our structures and will also bring back some other ideas from the Stormers where he is currently the kicking coach.

"Louis knows the game well. Therefore I have no doubt that he would do a splendid job with the team while I am away," Davids said.

Davids said he would be back to take charge of his team for their second Currie Cup match against the Sharks in Durban on June 29.

Davids said his selection as assistant coach to Chester Williams came as a big surprise.

"Earlier this week I went to the offices of the Boland Rugby Union to do some paper word when CEO Piet Bergh told me about my selection.

"It was just unbelievable. I was over the moon," Davids said.
