Blue Bulls thrash Bulldogs

Although they had their moments, the Border Bulldogs were well beaten by the Blue Bulls in their compulsory Currie Cup friendly at the Border Rugby Stadium on Wednesday night.
The visitors romped home 58-0 after being held to a 22-0 halftime lead. After allowing centre Marius Delport in for a converted try as early as the third minute following a missed tackle, followed by a further converted try to former Bullogs fullback Tiger Mangweni, the home side stepped up a gear and were looking good as the game progressed.
However, they allowed right wing Gerhard van der Heever in for a try near the end of the half which somewhat flattered the Blue Bulls.
But the visitors came out guns blazing after the break to run in a further five tries, completely outgunning the Bulldogs in all phases.Although they played their hearts out and defended like demons, the Bulldogs gave away far too many penalties under pressure.
They did have their moments when they attacked from broken play but all too often their ball carrier was ruthlessly cut down. Lock Flip van der Merwe got the try scoring rolling for the
Bulls in the second half with three going to pacey right wing Gerhard van der Heever, flyhalf Francois Brummer who also kicked 13 points wth the boot and centre Jaco Pretorius.
For the Blue Bulls eighthman Gerrit-Jan van Velze was outstanding while scrumhalf Heinie Adams always got his backs away quickly.
In turn the Bulldogs look to have a good one in scrumhalf Morne Adams and while big prop Buhle Mxunyelwa was used intelligently to carry the ball up.
Perhaps the most outstanding player for the home side though was centre Jeffry Taljard who punched far beyond his fighting weight on attack and defence.
