De Klerk poised for Lions presidency

Fri, 03 Jul 2009 11:53

Springbok and Transvaal lock forward Kevin de Klerk is now the undoubted favourite to become the next president of the Golden Lions Rugby Union.

This follows a decision of the union's chairmen's council earlier this week to have parts of the constitution changed to make it possible for De Klerk to be eligible for election - something which is not possible under the present constitution.

The date set for the amendment of the constitution as well as the election of the new office bearers has been set at July 27, with nominations to close on July 13.

All the present members of the council have come to the end of their term.

With the exception of former president Jannie Ferreira and his one deputy Manie Reyneke who resigned last month, all the members elected four years ago are available for re-election.

The elections are usually at the end of the year, but the resignation of the two senior members of the council has prompted the calling of a special general meeting to enable the new council to prepare for the 2010 season.
