SA imports crack Otago squad

Thu, 09 Jul 2009 09:59

Otago have named a squad for their second pre-season game against Mid Canterbury, with an interesting inclusion in little-known South African prop Peter van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe, a former Golden Lions and Pumas player, will make his Otago debut at tighthead in Ashburton on Saturday.

It has been a speedy rise up the ranks for Van der Merwe, who moved to New Zealand only this year.

But he has impressed after making his club debut for Harbour in June and now gets a chance to stake his claim for a starting berth for the Air New Zealand Cup.

Former Blue Bulls Craven Week player, Eben Joubert is another South African in the team, starting on the flank.

Otago: 15 Glenn Dickson , 14 Karne Hesketh, 13 Brett Mather, 12 Luke Herden, 11 Lucky Mulipola, 10 Chris Noakes, 9 Sean Romans, 8 Paul Grant, 7 Eben Joubert, 6 Charlie O’Connell, 5 Hoani Matenga, 4 Hayden Triggs, 3 Peter van der Merwe, 2 Peter Mirrielees, 1 Ben Nolan.
Replacements: 16 Jason Macdonald, 17 James Cooper, 18 Junior Maiono, 19 Adam Hill, 20 Johnny Legg, 21 Sam Young, 22 Fetu’u Vainikolo, 23 Andrew Parata.

Date: Saturday, July 11
Venue: Ashburton
Kick-off: 14.00 (02.00 GMT)
