Vickers and Tait commit to Falcons

Tue, 09 Mar 2010 17:07

Newcastle Falcons have secured another two key signatures, with the news that England Saxons hooker Rob Vickers and fullback Alex Tait have agreed new deals to stay at Kingston Park.

Vickers has signed a two-year contract extension, with the 28-year-old having enjoyed a breakthrough season after making his England Saxons debut against Italy A.

He is joined by Tait who signs a one-year deal, with the 21-year-old having made 20 starts for the club this season.

Director of rugby, Steve Bates, said: "Rob and Alex are both key contract renewals for us, and evidence that our top players are backing the ambition being shown by the club as we prepare for next season.

"Rob has crossed for three tries during his 24 appearances this season, establishing himself as a key performer on the Guinness Premiership stage and claiming a well-deserved call-up to the England Saxons squad.

"Alex has continued his own development by becoming a first team regular, and having come through the Falcons academy system he knows how much it means to represent his hometown team.

"Both players are key to the ambitious plans that we have here at the Falcons, and the fact that they are committed to the club gives us a great foundation on which we can build as we continue our recruitment and retention plans for 2010/11."

Speaking after signing his new deal, Vickers insisted that the ambition of the club was paramount in his thinking.

"We have made great strides this season in certain areas, there are solid foundations in place at the Falcons and everybody at the club is determined to really push on and grow over the course of the next two seasons," he said.

"I see Newcastle as the ideal place to continue my development as a player, we have a fantastic set-up here and the club is showing a great deal of intent to grow over the coming years."

Fullback Tait said: "I've come right through the system at Kingston Park, I feel like I'm developing as a player under the coaching staff here and I'm delighted to have agreed this new deal.

"Everybody here is excited by our future prospects, hopefully the supporters will feel the same and together we can really take this club to where everyone wants it to be."
