Sale want to avoid 'nightmare' last day

Thu, 11 Mar 2010 14:53

Sale Sharks boss Kingsley Jones is desperate to avoid the "nightmare" of travelling to Harlequins on the final day of the season still involved in a relegation battle to stay in the Guinness Premiership.

An awful run of eight consecutive defeats has left Sale propping up the Premiership table from last place, with relegation a real concern for the Edgeley Park faithful.

Jones is desperate to have his side's top flight status for next season secure before the trip to the Stoop on the last day of the season.

"It chills my spine to be thinking we would have to go to Quins with our Premiership status still not secure," Jones told The Manchester Evening News.

"The thought of listening for news of games elsewhere while we fight for our lives doesn't bear thinking about. That whole scenario would be a nightmare.

"But we've still got seven games to go and I think if we got three wins from those matches and still got relegated then we'd be unlucky. But we're certainly aiming for far more than three wins.

"A lot of those games are effectively eight-point games which is significant. A lot of the other teams around us play each other."
