6N Women: England to march on

Fri, 12 Mar 2010 00:47

The are three Women's Six Nations matches this weekend. In two the results are uncertain; in one there is as great a certainty as there can be in a sporting event.

England are simply head and shoulders above the rest

Fixtures, Round 4

Ireland vs Wales

Previous Results

Round 1
England vs Wales, 31-0
Ireland vs Italy, 22-5
Scotland vs France, 10-8

Round 2
England vs Italy, 41-0
France vs Ireland, 19-9
Wales vs Scotland, 28-12

Round 3
England vs Ireland, 22-5
Italy vs Scotland, 6-6
France vs Wales, 15-3

Beaten by Wales and drawing with Italy, Scotland are highly unlikely to pose any threat to England who have scored 94 points and had just a single try scored against them. In fact for England the biggest value of the Six Nations is preparation for the World Cup in England later this year when they will face perennial winners New Zealand. England are certainly the side best placed to topple New Zealand.

Because of this further view of things, England coach Gary Street has again made changes. This includes plonking his captain Catherine Spencer on the bench and bringing in a new flyhalf Katy McLean and making her captain.

There was a late replacement for England when nine-cap flank Heather Fisher came into the side for Amy Leonard who was injured in a club match.

Scotland on the other hand have made no changes from the team which drew with Italy.

Wales vs Ireland

Wales sprung a big surprise last year when they won the Triple Crown. They are nowhere near that this year and will find the improving Irish side a handful.

The Welsh side is the same as that beaten by France but there are changes in the backs where Amy Day comes into scrumhalf, Mared Evans to fullback and Ceri Redman to centre. In addition experienced Non Evans moves from fullback to wing.

Ireland has made three changes to the starting team beaten by England. Grace Davitt comes in to inside centre and Alison Miller to left wing while Amy Davis shifts to right wing.

France vs Italy

For Italy there is the novelty of playing at night.

There are two changes through the injury to the captain Paola Zangirolami, who has a broken nose, and the work commitments of scrumhalf Veronica Schiavon.

Italy come off something of a high after their draw with the Scots who beat France in Round 1, since when the French have been playing much better rugby.
