Sco v Eng: Scottish player ratings

Sat, 13 Mar 2010 23:03

Scotland and England played to a 15-all stalemate in their Six Nations clash at Murrayfield where the Calcutta Cup was on the line.

Neither side ever really attacked the tryline with penalty and drop-goal attempts deciding the outcome of the match.

The scrums were also a complete shambles and were constantly reset and used up game time with the referee having to constantly talk to the front rows.

What was built up to be a clash between two old rivals was only interesting because of the closeness of the score with nobody giving the game a much needed attacking spark.

Timmy Hancox rates the Scottish players:

Scotland:

15 Hugo Southwell: Replaced by Simon Danielli
Looked to join the line and create something on a few occasions and was reliable at the back when England looked to gain territory with the boot.
6/10

14 Sean Lamont:
Wasn't given a great deal of work to do out wide with the ball but he marked Ugo Monye well when the English wing tried to out round the on he outside. Came away with the ball deep in his own half late in the game and should have kicked downfield where there was nobody home for England.
5/10

13 Nick de Luca:
Wasn't able to find many gaps in the English defence after a decent start to the game and seemed to run out of ideas when plan 'A' didn't work out.
6/10

12 Graeme Morrison:
Was a good runner in centre field and one of the best backline players on display with some effective strong running that kept England guessing. He broke the advantage line often and got his side onto the front foot.
7/10

11 Max Evans:
Had some exciting moments out wide and darted about looking to create something on attack before being closed down by the English defence.
7/10

10 Dan Parks: Replaced by Phil Godman
Was excellent when kicking for posts with two attempts hitting the polls from a long way out that could have been the difference. From the follow up of one of the penalties he tried a chip over the tryline when keeping the ball in hand would have been a better option to score a try.
6/10

9 Chris Cusiter: Replaced by Rory Lawson
Made one sniping run that offered some excitement and gave his flyhalf good clean ball to work with. He had a tidy day at the office without anything special to write home about.
6/10

8 Johnnie Beattie:
Was full of running all game linked well with the halfbacks and continuously broke the advantage line. His work-rate at the breakdown was fantastic and he was the stand out player in the match.
8/10

7 John Barclay:
Put his body on the line and combined well with the other loose forwards to capitalise on errors made by the visitors. Tackled well, but didn't make enough steals at the breakdown.
6/10

6 Kelly Brown: Replaced by Alan MacDonald
Got himself all round the park and was always an option at first receiver for the scrumhalf. He looked to link with the backline and came close to scoring a try before the heavy collision with Ugo Monye that forced them both off the field.
7/10

5 Alastair Kellock:
Worked hard in the tight phases of the game and made some big tackles in loose play for a solid game.
7/10

4 Jim Hamilton: Replaced by Nathan Hines
Was workman-like and put in a few big tackles early on in the match.
6/10

3 Euan Murray:
Had a poor day in the scrums and couldn't get his binding right causing endless re-set scrums.
4/10

2 Ross Ford: Replaced by Scott Lawson
Was a useful runner in the loose to bash the ball up field and was a physical presence at the breakdown..
6/10

1 Allan Jacobsen: Replaced by Geoff Cross
Had one or two strong ball carries in the game but struggled in the scrums. Went missing in the second half.
5/10

16 Scott Lawson: On for Ross Ford in the 64th minute.

17 Geoff Cross: On for Allan Jacobsen in the 71st minute.
Not enough time to be rated

18 Nathan Hines: On for Jim Hamilton in the 51st minute.
Produced a hard working performance without standing out in the forwards.
6/10

19 Alan MacDonald: On for Kelly Brown in the 55th minute.
Was excellent on defence and had a good outing with ball in hand. His follow up from Dan Parks' penalty attempt that struck the post almost gave Scotland a try.
7/10

20 Rory Lawson: On for Chris Cusiter in the 60th minute.
Not enough time to be rated

21 Phil Godman: On for Dan Parks in the 71st minute.
