Wrap: Top 14, Round 22

Sun, 14 Mar 2010 16:19

Again this weekend, when the international players were away playing for France, Scotland, England, Italy, Romania and Georgia, there have been surprises.

In particular it was the victories of Bayonne and Montauban which showed the narrowness of the gap between top and bottom. Just the size of Montauban's score against ambitious Racing was a surprise.

Brive's win was no surprise against the erratic Parisians.

Results, Round 22

Bayonne vs Clermont, 22-13
Toulouse vs Montpellier, 34-3
Toulon vs Castres, 19-6
Bourgoin vs Albi, 17-7
Brive vs Stade Français, 26-14
Perpignan vs Biarritz, 19-14
Montauban vs Racing Métro 92, 45-31

Log after Round 22

In the top six is where you want to be because that means the play-offs. In the bottom two is where you don't want to be, because that means relegation.

Despite their defeat Castres are still top but Perpignan's victory has leapfrogged them over Clermont who lost. Brive have moved up above the two major disappointments, Stade Français and Biarritz and, improving as they are, are closing in on Racing.

Down below the struggle is desperate to avoid being the team to join Albi in Pro D2. Montpellier, thumped by understrength Toulouse, are now in jeopardy while Montauban advanced their cause though they are in no way out of trouble. The victories for Bourgoin and Bayonne are keeping their noses above water.

The next four rounds are fascinating with many possibilities.

1. Castres 67
2. Perpignan 66
3. Clermont 65
4. Toulouse 65
5. Toulon 63
6. Racing-Métro  55
7. Brive 51
8. Stade Français 49
9. Biarritz 48
10. Bourgoin 44
11. Bayonne 43
12. Montpellier 42
13. Montauban 41
14. Albi 20
