Saracens have agreed to a request by the Lions to release captain Wikus van Heerden from his contract with immediate effect.
The Springbok flank will join the Johannesburg team, and be eligible to play in the rest of the Super 14 tournament for the side that he has captained in the past.
Van Heerden left the Golden Lions at the end of the 2006 Currie Cup competition to join the Bulls - where he won a Super 14 title in 2007 - and thereafter moved to Saracens.
The Lions are currently second from bottom in the Super 14, having lost all of their first five Super 14 matches and conceded more than 70 points in two of those games.
The experienced loose forward will add immense value to the struggling Lions who will be delighted to have him back earlier than expected.
"Wikus has produced many outstanding performances for Saracens and we wish him and his family well," Saracens director of rugby Brendan Venter said.
