McFadden's boot sinks Warriors

Thu, 18 Mar 2010 23:58

Home centre Fergus McFadden kicked two penalties, two conversions and scored a try as Leinster edged the Glasgow Warriors 20-14 in a Magners League encounter at the RDS, Dublin, on Thursday.

McFadden opened the scoring with a fourth-minute penalty, but the visitors' first try was a fine individual effort from right wing Hefin O'Hare - side-stepping four would-be defenders from the half-way line.

The try came as Glasgow responded superbly to being turned over three metres from the Leinster tryline. Ruaridh Jackson converted to atone for a sixth minute penalty miss in the blustery wind.

However, McFadden monopolised the early scoring - goaling two penalties and converting his own 22nd minute try when he bolted on to a crossfield break from Isa Nacewa.

Nacewa's boot, allied to the strength of the wind, set up a line-out close to the Glasgow line as the clock ticked down to half-time. Sadly for Glasgow the ball was stolen at the front and as Leinster worked through the phases, left to right, fullback Girvan Dempsey escaped for their second try.  McFadden converted to send the hosts to their changing room in good heart with a 20-7 lead.

A welter of substitutes saw Glasgow introduce Moray Low, Fergus Thomson, Ayr's Paul Burke and Colin Gregor for Ed Kalman, Dougie Hall, James Eddie and Jackson.

And it was Colin Gregor who gave Warriors a sniff with a 68th minute try.

Gregor's footballing skills had established a foothold in the home 22 and Gregor's arcing run from right to left found space and the try line. Gregor's conversion brought Glasgow to within one score.

But the home team held out for the win.
