New Zealand the champions - again

For the fourth Women's Rugby World Cup in succession, New Zealand are the champions, but they had to fight hard to beat England 13-10 before a crowd of over 13,000 at The Stoop in Twickenham in the last match of the last day of the 2010 Women's Rugby World Cup.

The Black Ferns deserved their win as they created more opportunities but they came close to selfdestructing. They conceded numerous penalties at the tackle and suffered no fewer than three yellow cards as a result.

The first was against one of Women's Rugby's greatest players - the New Zealand flyhalf Anna Richards who ate 45 may just be the oldest player to receive a yellow card in a Test match. While she was off, prop Mel Bosman joined her in the sin bin and in the second half New Zealand's tall captain Melissa Ruscoe also went to the sin bin, also for a tackle infringement.

At one stage New Zealand were down to 13 players and in that time played splendidly. They got themselves into a scoring position at a lineout when Ann Richards was restored to them. Then the tournament's chief try-scorer, Carla Hohepa, suddenly accelerated past three defenders to score. Kelly Brazier, who missed four penalty kicks at goal in the match, goaled this one, the hardest she had had.

Katy McLean, England's flyhalf, also missed three penalty kicks at goal as well. The one, on the stroke of half time, hit the upright and stayed out.

England started the second half well and early on Katy McLean found her range and goaled a penalty. Kelly Brazier made it 10-3 and then it seemed that New Zealand had to score.

First Carla Hohepa picked up a neglected ball at a tackle and raced 50 metres down the field. She seemed certain to score when, by some miracle of determination, lock Joanna McGilchrist dived and just managed to catch the flying Kiwi from behind and hung on. England tried to scramble the ball away but then fullback Victoria Grant counterattacked and only another great tackle saved a try.

With Melissa Ruscoe off, England attacked and opted for two scrums in lieu of penalties five metres from the New Zealand line. They got a shove on with the second one and were getting close to the line when they went left and wing Charlotte Barras cut back to score. From far out on the right, Katy McLean converted to level the scores.

The only other score in the match of many penalties was a penalty goal by Kelly Brazier which won the match for the Black Ferns.,
