Player Ratings: Going nowhere slowly

After a promising start in which they scored two tries in the first quarter, the Boks went back into their mediocre shells to lose to a weak Australian team.

Warren Fortune rates the South African players!

15 Johan Goosen

He was probably the best player on the park for the Springboks. He scored a try and hand a few good runs.

6/10

14 Bryan Habana

Did nothing special while he was one the field. He is just not given enough opportunities to make a real impact.

3/10

13 Jesse Kriel

He was good on defence and got his team over the advantage line on a few occasions with some strong carries.

5/10

12 Juan de Jongh

He did not justify his selection in this Springbok team and was totally ineffective in that midfield channel.

2/10

11 Francois Hougaard

Like Habana, the Springboks did not make good use of him on the wing. He had a few runs out wide, but that was it.

4/10

10 Elton Jantjies

He did not deliver a commanding performance in that flyhalf channel and did not give his outside backs any direction.

3/10

9 Francois de Klerk

His decision making from the base of the ruck was poor and his passing was a bit amateurish at times.

3/10

8 Warren Whiteley

He hardly made an impact with his few carries, but he did score a five-pointer. He also made his presence felt at the breakdown.

5/10

7 Teboho Mohoje

The flank had one good run in the game and that was that.

Player Ratings: Going nowhere slowly6 Francois Louw

His work rate around the park was poor for someone with his international experience and he did little to suggest that he is still a breakdown master.

3/10

5 Lodewyk de Jager

The baby-faced lock looked like he was just making up the numbers on the field at times and he hardly brought anything to South Africa's physical game.

3/10

4 Eben Etzebeth

He did his part on defence and got over the advantage line on a few occasions. However, he needs to work on his discipline.

5/10

3 Lourens Adriaanse

It was a mixed bag for the prop at scrum time and his work around the park was very disappointing.

2/10

2 Adriaan Strauss (captain)

It was a vastly improved performance by the captain. He played a part in one of his team's tries and he found his line-out jumpers. However, he was quiet for a large part of the second half.

5/10

1 Tendai Mtawarira

He was solid for the most part at scrum time, but like Lourens Adriaanse, he failed to make his presence felt in open play.

3/10

Replacements:

16 Mbongeni Mbonambi (On for Strauss, 74th min)

Not enough time to be rated.

17 Steven Kitshoff (On for Mtawarira, 50th min)

He struggled for dominance in the scrum and played a bit part in open play.

2/10

18 Trevor Nyakane (On for Adriaanse, 50th min)

Got put under pressure in one scrum, which resulted in a penalty and was almost non-existent on attack or defence.

2/10

19 Franco Mostert (On for Mohoje, 46th min)

He did a lot of good on defence, but not much with ball in hand.

4/10

20 Pieter-Steph du Toit (On for De Jager, 41st min)

He should really be starting every game for the Boks. He carried the ball with aggression and got over the advantage line on a few occasions.

6/10

21 Jaco Kriel (On for Louw, 50th min)

He did what he could in a losing cause. He looked for work constantly when he came on and had a few carries.

5/10

22 Morné Steyn (On for Jantjies, 64th min)

He was no better than the man he replaced and did not make any significant impact off the bench.

3/10

23 Lionel Mapoe: (On for Habana, 58th min – on for Hougaard, 78th min)

Not enough time to be rated.
