Large sonny bill williams v british and irish lions 2017 800

OPINION: A reckless tackle by New Zealand midfielder Sonny Bill Williams in the 25th minute saw him leave the field due to a red card.

The All Blacks showed their class by putting up a very strong performance with 14 men on the field. For a moment you would have thought that they would still pull it through due to the Lions' ill-discipline.

The All Blacks were unable to score any tries but the scoreboard pressure they created through Beauden Barrett's boot almost secured it for them. However, the Lions showed some character and outplayed them on the day.

Jeremy Papier rates the New Zealand players:

15 Israel Dagg:
Good showing by Dagg in his familiar position. Had a few good runs, he was solid under the high ball and his kicking was good. He also knocked two balls forward.

14 Waisake Naholo:
Few strong runs, but space closed up quickly and he  did not have many opportunities

13 Anton Lienert-Brown:
Good performance by Brown. He tackled well and carried a few times.

12 Sonny Bill Williams:
Off with a red card in 24th minute for a reckless tackle on Anthony Watson

11 Rieko Ioane:
Very quiet game on the wing.

10 Beauden Barrett:
Missed three penalties,  but other than that had a good game all round. His tactical kicking was pretty good. However, he did not have as many runs but showed good control.

9 Aaron Smith:
Solid performance. Box-kicked well and swept well on defence

8 Kieran Read:
A strong performance by the captain. Kept working until the end.

7 Sam Cane:
Very strong performance by Cane. Defensively, excellent and he had a few strong carries up front.

6 Jerome Kaino:
Sacrificed by coach Steve Hansen for the SBW red card - the most likely protocol. he Had two carries and one line-out take before leaving the field.

5 Samuel Whitelock:
Good performance by the big man. Worked hard but not as prominent as we've come to expect from him. Good line-out takes.

4 Brodie Retallick:
A strong performance by the agile lock and he had a good contest with his opposite number. He was the go-to man at the line-outs.

3 Owen Franks:
Good showing by Franks. The scrums were evenly contested.

2 Codie Taylor
A Strong performance by Taylor. Stayed in the game till the and had a few good carries. Missed one throw-in at the line-out, but overall it was solid throws in the conditions.
