K Day in Grahamstown

Mon, 14 Jul 2008 21:48

St Andrew's and Kingswood have been playing each other since 1898. It still is one of Grahamstown's biggest matches and this year it was played a City Lords, a close encounter as both teams have been playing well this year, College winning 8-6.

The match report is from St Andrew's

Despite the very cold weather over this past weekend, there was some very good rugby played. The First XV match was very much a tale of two halves. St Andrew’s really dominated the first half but were not able to turn this into a significant points' advantage.

They enjoyed plenty of ball from both line-outs and scrums but could not put it too good use. It almost felt as if the field was a bit small for them as they ran out of space on a number of occasions. A lack of variation made it easier for Kingswood to defend. Midway way through the half, fullback, Grant Macdonald, found some space on the outside and with pure pace and power managed to force his way over the tryline in the right-hand corner for the only try of the match. The conversion was not successful. Kingswood kept themselves in the match with a penalty before half-time.

The second half started very well for St Andrew’s with Grant Macdonald almost crossing the try-line again. Kingswood were awarded a penalty from that move, kicked it out and from then on most of the play took place in the St Andrew’s half. Kingswood launched attack after attack and only desperate defence kept them at bay. Although St Andrew’s did come close to scoring on a few occasions, the only points that they managed was through a James Price penalty. Kingswood attacked repeatedly and fed off plenty of loose ball, forcing St Andrew’s into mistakes. Despite having a number of penalty goal attempts, Kingswood were able to convert only one and this close-fought, entertaining, but not pretty, encounter ended 8-6 to St Andrew’s College.
