Big Glenwood win

Mon, 21 Jul 2008 22:14

Glenwood inflicted their largest defeat on Maritzburg College in the history of the two famous schools this Saturday thanks to a superbly clinical 47-10 triumph, with the win being at Goldstone's making it that much sweeter. It was also College's biggest loss by any KwaZulu Natal side for over half a century!

It was Glenwood's fourth successive win over College.

According to the Glenwood coaches the boys played the type of exciting running rugby that was so evident when they swept to the SANIX title in Japan.

With seven Craven Week representatives in the Glenwood starting 15 it was always going to be an uphill battle for College, but the opening stanza seemed to suggest the opposite. The home team came out firing but after No.8 François Kleinhans's try in the 15th minute the College resolve cracked as the Green Machine clicked into gear. Flyhalf Storm Pearton added a penalty shortly before Flanker Ruan Burr-Dixon barged over the line for Glenwood's 2nd, Pearton converted for a half-time score of 15-3.

After a fairly close game in Durban, Glenwood were determined to continue their assault and not 'fall asleep' as was the case in May.

In the space of 19 minutes Glenwood touched-down five more times courtesy of brilliant handling, support play and vision. The spectators in Maritzburg were astounded by the display saying it was the best they had ever seen the Durban school perform. Tries came from right wing Marinus Coetzee (2), scrumhalf Andrich Arlow, captain & SA Schools' hooker Shaun Malton and flank JP Lafond. Pearton converted two of those as well as another penalty.

College grabbed a consolation try as reward for their stout defence over the final nine minutes.

Glenwood missed only one tackle and made just three handling errors the entire afternoon, a definite indicator that their Sports Academy is starting to bear fruit.
