St Andrew's do well against Grey

Mon, 04 Aug 2008 15:30

The match between Grey and St Andrew's College in Port Elizabeth was a highly entertaining one, which the Port Elizabeth side won 37-25.

Grey started the match dramatically  when they scored with in the first five minutes. It was clear that Grey would run the ball at St Andrew's. St Andrew's got same good ball from the rucks but could not use it very effectively. The game seemingly belonged to Grey, when they scored  three tries to the single penalty by St Andrew's in the first half. Poor decision-making by St Andrew's in this half led to two of Grey’s tries. St Andrew's straggled to get their rhythm going. St Andrew's went into the break trailing 17-3.

The second half did not start very good for St Andrew's as Grey scored straight from the kick-off. After this St Andrew's showed more urgency. They kept the ball closer to their forwards, and started rush defence witch made it difficult for Grey to play wide. St Andrew's forwards came more into the game, with Niewoudt Gresse leading from the front. Tactical kicking from James Boyd-Moss in this half was match better. Grey started to play under pressure and made more mistakes. Wesley Bell scored for St Andrew's after St Andrew's displayed lots off patience in keeping ball in hand. Richard Strydom and Chris Fennell made life difficult for Grey in the line-outs. St Andrew's started to crawl their way back into the match, just to make bad mistakes at crucial times. Against teams like Grey you can't afford to make mistakes. They will punish you. With the score at 32-25 to Grey and one minutes to go, St Andrew's attacked hard. Niewoudt Gresse came within a half a metre of scoring. A scrum were awarded to St Andrew's five metres from Grey’s try-line. Bad communication by St Andrew's and desperate passes led to one mistake after another which led to a try for Grey in the dying seconds of the game.

St Andrew's could be very proud off themselves playing so well against one off the best school sides in the country.
