Gim in huge Interschools win

Paarl Gim broke all manner of records when they beat Paarl Boys' High 35-8 in Paarl on Saturday.

It is the highest score in the Interschools meetings between the two schools, the biggest winning margin and it gave Gim a record fifth successive victory.

The pressure on Boys' High before the match was huge. The whole Boys' High community was anxious at the possibility of a fifth defeat but Boys' High had been peaking well. They had beaten Wynberg 35-0 the week before where Gim had won by only five points.

before the match Nico Momsen, the experienced Gim coach, was worried. He expected a physical confrontation and a close match. It did not happen and the score could have been even bigger on Faure Street's muddy, slippery ground.

Boys' High started well enough but a try by flank Jackquin Rodgers set Gim on a winning path.  Shortly after that Gim's flyhalf JH Potgieter dummied and scored to make it 14-0. (The previous record points' difference was 19 points and Gim were moving in on that already.) At half-time Gim led 19-3.

Speaking afterwards about the match afterwards, Nico Momsen said that the result had come as a huge surprise but put it down to Gim's discipline, skills and the leadership of captain Louis Schreuder and vice-captain Helmut Lehman.

Boys' High were under pressure throughout the match and the pressure told as they became increasingly panicky and conceded three yellow cards.

The referee for the match was South Africa's top-ranked referee Jonathan Kaplan.
