Schools play Academy in Durban
Tue, 19 Aug 2008 14:02
In the curtainraiser to the Tri-Nations Test between South Africa and Australia. We give the teams and the SA Schools results down the years.
The match will kick off at 12.30 and will be televised live.
The SA Schools side was first chosen in 1974, against the wishes of Danie Craven who wanted Craven Week to be a festival and not trials. That team beat Scottish Schools 26-9 at Ellis park and went on to tour Italy and France. Since then a South African Schools side has been chosen each year.
The SA Schools side mostly played internally - against University or Defence Force teams. In 1987 it first played against the equivalent of the modern Academy side. It was sponsored by Nampak and called the Nampak Schools XV, chosen on a 50-50 racial basis. The selectors were Ian Kirkpatrick and Dougie Dyers.
In 1989 the Nampak team beat SA Schools at King's Park in Durban, as Absa Stadium then was, and were close to doing so again in 1990, 1991 and 1992.
In 2000 the Academy side beat the Schools side 23-20. The Academy was captained by Matt Stevens of Kearsney who has gone on to prop for England. In the SA Schools side was Jacques Cronjé of HTS John Vorster who played for South Africa.
As happened last year the Academy side is no longer team chosen from Craven Week, a sort of B team. It represents the best of the Academy Youth tournament that was held in George during the winter schools holidays. The SA Academy side should thus be less competitive than in years gone by.
A major challenge for the two teams is that they will only have three days to prepare for the game, as they both assemble in Durban on Wednesday.
