Wynberg: Winners of the Villagers Sevens
The weather always batters the Villager Sevens. It was the same this year, only more so, as Wynberg overcame the weather and SACS to win the Villager Sevens for the first time since 1994.
Despite the gale-force winds and belting rain, there was a good turn-out at Brookside, as there always is.
For Wynberg, who have had an erratic season, it was a good night. In Round 1 they played Reddam and won 41-0 In Round 2 they played Pinelands and Won 37-0. In the Quarter Finals they played Muizenberg and Won 42-0.
In the semifinals they played Drakenstein (a diamond in the rough team who played some fantastic rugby. the first time they came to the tournament) and won 10-7.
Meanwhile SACS (2007 winners) had eliminated the slick Bishops side (17-12) in the other semifinal.
In the "electrifying final" Wynberg won 22-19. What a final!
The Plate was won by Zwaanswyk for the very first time (first time they have won it. In Round 2 they had a walk over because Spine Road did not pitch up.
In the quarters they played Temperance and Won 19-0. In the semis they played Violets and Won 10-0 and in the final they played another fantastic team DF Malan and, in another knife edge match, won 17-12.
All in all a very successful day, enjoyed by all.
Awards and prizes were handed out by South African Cricketing legend Brian MacMillan, who is on the Rugby Committee at Villagers.
