Hoërskool Framesby won the inaugural @lantic sevens held at the Daniël Pienaar Technical School last weekend.
This tournament was well organised by Moolman Olivier from the local school.
The Framesby side, well coached by Louis Gerber, were by far the best team at the tournament. They easily won their section and played the talented Itembelihle Comprehensive School side in the semifinals. Itembelihle made it to the semis with some excellent victories and highly enterprising rugby, but playing a side like Framesby was always going to be a bridge too far for them. . . and all other schools! The Framesby side were clinical and scored four goals, beating Itembelihle 28-0, but the boys from the townships never gave up.
The other semifinal, played between Die Brandwag and Daniël Pienaar, went into extra time, with Daniël Pienaar winning with a penalty. The game was marked by huge tackles and some brilliant individual performances.
Itembelihle and Die Brandwag played out for third place. Die Brandwag started like a house on fire and led 14-0 after 5 minutes. It seemed as if Itembelihle were in for a hiding but the townsship side, spurred on by the crowd bounced back with tries from Zingisa April , who brought cheers from the crowd everytime he touched the ball, John Magenuka and Mbembe Payi, all converted by Coyi Banda. With the score locked at 21-21 all, Itembelihle received a penalty in front of the poles, Banda's drop went wide. The game went into extra time and Die Brandwag kicked a penalty to win a very exciting game 24-21.
In the final, Framesby showed their class by totally outplaying a gutsy Daniël Pienaar side 31-14. For Framesby lock Cornel du Preez had a storming game but the pick of their side was flyhalf Tiaan Dorfling, who was also the player of the tournament and received an invitation to travel to Dubai. Framesby will now represent the province in the provincial @lantic Sevens in Pretoria on 1 November.
