'Bosch edge Selborne in tight match

Tight win: 'Bosch player eyeing the opposition Pic: livemoments.co.za

Rondebosch prevailed against Selborne in a tight, error-ridden contest that was decided by the boot of 'Bosch fullback Scott van Breda, who scored all his team's points in a 15-8 victory over the East London side.

Selborne had the better of the early going ithe first match of day two in the Cape Schools Week, putting Rondebosch under pressure deep inside their own half. Rondebosch withstood much of the early pressure but couldn't make any progress into opposition territory.  A strong run by Selborne eighthman Kwezi Mona got in behind the 'Bosch defence and some good hands put Cameron Creswell away to score in the corner.

This early setback sparked the 'Bosch boys into life, and they managed to get their hands on the ball for the first time. Their first foray into the Selborne half yielded a kickable penalty chance, which fullback Scott van Breda duly converted. Selborne replied immediately with a penalty of their own, only for 'Bosch to convert further pressure into another three points from the boot of van Breda. The match was a tight and tense affair with a high penalty count, and was riddled with errors from both sides. Much of the first half was played out in the middle of the field, with both flyhalfs putting pressure on the opposing back three with high balls. The players entered the change room with the score 9-8 to Rondebosch after a stop-start first stanza.

The game started to open up more in the second half with the Rondebosch backline coming more into the game. Selborne struggled to hold on against a far more determined 'Bosch side that started to string some phases together. The teams were struggling to break each other down and some big hits were put in, tensions beginning to fray in the heat of the contest.

The game needed a team to take control in the final quarter, and it was Rondebosch who started to assert their authority. The 'Bosch pack started to dominate the breakdown and possession and territory went in favour of the Cape side. Selborne wilted under the pressure, dealing badly with the 'Bosch kicking game and ill-discipline at ruck time costing them dearly. Van Breda slotted a further two penalties to make the score 15-8, and Rondebosch managed to hold onto their lead in the final minutes despite a dangerous late run by Selborne flyer Khantu Mfenyana.
