SACS secured a last-gasp victory over an enterprising Dale side, scoring in the last play to earn a thrilling 18-12 win in front of their home crowd on day two of the Cape Schools Week.
Dale showed their intentions early, moving the ball wide almost immediately. The dangerous Dale backline got quick early ball, which seemed to catch SACS off guard. Dale outside centre Sawa Time made a good break in the midfield, and the move was rounded off by fullback Olunje Gwanmi, who dotted down for the first score of the match.
SACS's reply was immediate, centre Godfrey Tundube running a good line at pace and brushing off some weak tackles to level the scores. The home side then had a period of dominance, putting the Dale defence under pressure, with Tundube particularly dangerous. The pressure on Dale eventually told, with SACS flyhalf Matthew Mohle punishing a breakdown indiscretion to make the score 8-5 in favour of the home team.
The Dale
backs were full of adventure and showed signs of their devastating pace and elusiveness. They struggled to breach the SACS defence though, and failed to capitalise on their opportunities. The score was 8-5 at the break despite Dale playing most of the rugby towards the end of the first half.
SACS had a good start to the second half, and the pack began to show their ascendance. But their slow and structured approach had little penetration and the backline was too lateral in their attack. Dale continued to attack out wide, but SACS managed to keep the Dale pacemen at bay with some solid backline defence, the Dale players often too slow in support.
Dale eventually struck through the middle with a more direct, straight running approach. This time, the support was quick to arrive and the clean ball was spread to centre Andile Jho, who burst through a gap to score. Once again, the Dale celebrations were short-lived, a fantastic halfway line penalty from SACS lock Stuart Boliter cutting the deficit to just one point.
Dale responded with some more enterprising back play, but they struggled to find the final pass to score. SACS started to open up in the final minutes and made a good burst down the left hand touchline. The Dale defence was scrambling, and gave away a kickable, albeit very difficult, penalty chance.
It all came down to this final kick, with the pressure on Mohle to win the match in front of the SACS fans. His kick didn't quite have the distance, though, falling under the crossbar. The Dale players were slow to react, and the ball bounced wickedly up in the air.
Godfrey Tundube followed up the kick brilliantly to dive on the ball in amongst a host of desperate Dale defenders to score his second try of the match. Dale looked stunned as the whistle blew, having snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with a costly last-minute error. SACS, on the other hand, were jubilant after claiming their second win out of two in the week.
